Destination
Antarctica
A bucket-list item for most, the booming cruising market has made Antarctica so much more accessible for eager travelers. In the past, cruising infrastructure has meant that itineraries have only been able to enter the Antarctic circle, however new purpose-built cruising vessels are now getting guests deeper into the Great White Continent. Most Antarctic cruises depart and return from the South American mainland, however there are also a handful of unique itineraries that cruise from New Zealand.
Ports of Call
Ushuaia, Argentina
City Ushuaia

The world's southernmost city, Ushuaia overlooks Beagle Channel, named after the ship that took Charles Darwin to the bottom of the world. Founded just over one hundred years ago, this rustic town is situated amidst incredible snowcapped mountains, dramatic waterfalls, massive glaciers, and a forest known for its red foliage. Tierra del Fuego, the "Land of Fire," twelve miles to the west of Ushuaia, is known for its glacial landscape and its national park, which is a bird-watcher's paradise.

West Point, Falkland Islands
City West Point

New Island, Falkland Islands

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
City Stanley

Port Stanley is the only town on the Falkland Islands, and though it has little more than 1,200 residents, it contains half of the islands' population. On the other hand there are 700,000 sheep, and a wonderful assortment of sea birds and elephant seals. Though subject to the British Queen, Argentinean claims to the "Islas Malvinas" caused war in 1982.

Drake Passage, Antarctica

Elephant Island, Antarctica
City Elephant Island

Elephant Island is a popular attraction to Antarctic tourists because of the historical experiences of Captain Shackleton of the Endurance and his 27-crew men. In January 1915, they were ship wrecked in the pack ice of Weddell Sea. Stranded on ice floes and three small boats from the Endurance they finally made it to Elephant Island. While the crew survived on seal and penguin meet, Captain Shackleton took 5 crewmembers with him to the island of South Georgia where he and one other crewmember hiked 36 hours across South Georgia to the whaling station on the opposite side. From there Shackleton borrowed a tugboat to mount a rescue of his men on the opposite side of South Georgia Island and on Elephant Island. After four more months and three failed attempts, Shackleton was finally able to illustrate a Captains loyalty to his crew on August 30, 1916. Not a crewman was lost.

Antarctic Sound, Antarctica

Known as "Iceberg Alley", you will be amazed by the amazed at the acompanying views. Because this is an icy waterway, it can be difficult to navigate. However, you might be able to visit such locations as Paulet Island, Hope bay or Brown Bluff.

Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
City Antarctic Peninsula

Not too many ships make it as far south as Antarctica, so the journey is a highlight by itself. The Antarctic Peninsula juts out from Antarctica towards the eastern side of South America between the 59th and 76th West longitudinal parallels. And since you are on your way do not forget your camera as you are bound to see some amazing creatures on a never more pristine background. For starters you will see gentoo and chinstrap penguins; blue-eyed shags and snowy sheathbills; crabeater seals and minke whales.
